The babies have finished their treatment to help close their PDAs, though both vessels still remain open. Both are much improved though, so they are going to withhold any further treatment for now. The doctors are hopeful the vessels will continue closing on their own. They will just continue to monitor both babies for a while to determine if any further treatment may be necessary in the future. The medication they received caused them to retain a lot of fluid, including fluid in their lungs, so Elliot had to go back onto a little nasal oxygen until he can get rid of the excess fluid from his lungs and breathe easier. Hopefully he will be back to normal within the next day or 2. Ava had some fluid retention as well, but no trouble breathing so she is just plugging along as usual!
Overall, there haven't been a lot of changes in the past several days other than the PDA treatment. The babies are 2 weeks old now (though it seems like months!) and getting bigger every day. Ava is up to 3 lbs 8 oz and Elliot has reached a whopping 4 lbs! They are now at the point where we can start trying to feed them orally. It may take another week or so before they're able to get the hang of coordinating sucking, swallowing and breathing at the same time, but we'll get there! They just continue to amaze us with their strength and resilience. We just keep counting the days until we can bring them home, though it never seems soon enough!
